What To Do After The Interview

After weeks of applying for jobs, you finally had that all-important job interview, and it went even better than expected. Now, you can sit back and wait for the phone to ring, right? Wrong! As a job seeker, what you do after the interview is over can be just as important as what happened in the room. However, making the right impression with your follow-up communication is easier said than done. While too little contact can make you seem disinterested, calling or emailing too frequently can annoy the people you’re trying to impress. Here are some tips to help job candidates show interest without being overbearing:

Send a Note

If you’ve ever applied for a job, then you probably know that sending a thank-you note after the fact is just good manners. However, you may not know just what this all-important email should include. For best results, reiterate your interest in the position and mention a few past accomplishments that will ensure your success at the company. And of course, if you promised the interviewer you’d send a copy of your resume, be sure to do so in a timely fashion.

Check Back Occasionally

If you haven’t heard back after a few days, it’s fine to check in with the hiring manager. However, be sure to keep this communication to a minimum, as you don’t want to pester the person you’re trying to persuade. A weekly phone call or email asking about your application status is generally fine. Not only does following up in the manner show that you are truly interested, but it also lets you plan the rest of your job search accordingly.

Don’t Stop Applying

If the interview went well, you may be tempted to stop sending out resumes. While job searching can be tiresome, it’s important that you keep applying and interviewing until you receive an offer letter. After all, the company in question may end up hiring from within or putting off the decision altogether, and you don’t want to be left in the lurch!
