Do Your Employees Respect You?

Showing Favoritism

People have a keen sense of fair play. If you are giving all the plum assignments to one employee or looking the other way when they are tardy or absent, the rest of your team will notice and become resentful. Treat all of your employees evenhandedly if you want to keep their respect.

You’re Too Nice

Everyone wants a boss who is kind and understanding – no one wants a pushover. If you avoid confrontation, fail to stand up for your department or don’t terminate underperforming employees, your team will not respect you and may even push the boundaries to see just how much they can get away with.

You’re Impossible to Please

Some managers believe in keeping the bar just out of reach, so that their employees never quite meet  their standards. No one will continue to perform their best if they don’t get some sort of positive feedback. Make goals attainable and give your team the tools they need to succeed.

You Have a Lousy Work Ethic

If you want your people to go above and beyond, you’ll have to lead the way. Come in early, stay late. Pitch in on the most menial of tasks. Take pride in your work and the work of your subordinates. Always give them the benefit of the doubt if you receive complaints from customers or other departments. Employees need to believe that you have their backs if you are to earn their trust.

You Lack Accountability

Nothing will lose employee respect faster than failing to take responsibility when something goes wrong. Anyone can make a mistake. Gain respect by owning up to it and taking steps to correct it, not by throwing someone else under the bus.
